2015 Reading Resolutions

Happy New Year! I'm very much looking forward to what 2015 will bring, especially when it comes to books. Below are a few of my reading resolutions for the upcoming year!

1. Read one book each day in 2015.

Last year my goal was to read 250 books. I met and exceeded that goal, reading a total of 332 books in 2014. This was the first year that I included picture books in the count, so it was higher than other years. At first I considered upping my goal to 350 books for 2015, but, in the end, I thought it’d be fun to try to read a book a day, especially because I’m a sucker for fun hashtags like #bookaday.

2. Read 12 adult novels in 2015.

As a bookseller at a bookstore that sells more than just YA and below, I feel like it’s irresponsible of me not to read more broadly, at least occasionally. Plus, there are so many adult books that I add to my reading list but never make time for. This year I read Shotgun Lovesongs and Station Eleven, two books I adored and still think about even months after reading – next year I want to read enough adult novels that I can justify making a Top 10 list so I have an excuse to talk up the adult books I love!

3. Read more nonfiction in 2015.

This year I read a few nonfiction novels, including Candace Fleming’s The Family Romanov which made my Best YA of 2014 list. I’ve read little to no nonfiction in the past – I guess I’ve always assumed I’d find it dry and boring – but now I know that I was most definitely wrong. I’m not going to set a specific number goal when it comes to nonfiction, but I’d definitely like to expand my reading horizons. Books I’d really like to read this year include Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Detroit, What’s the Economy forAnyway?, Unbroken, and I Am Malala.

4. Read 10 or more graphic novels in 2015.

I hesitated to put a number on this goal, but I really, really love graphic novels and I shouldn’t have a problem reading 10 once I start. The hardest part of this goal is actually going to be reviewing the graphic novels; I find it more difficult than normal reviews because I never know how to comment on the art.

What are your 2015 reading goals and resolutions? Leave links and goals in the comments! Here’s to another successful year of reading!

  2. I hope you have better luck meeting that goal than I did! I tried for it in 2014 and ultimately had to lower my goal because there was just no way I was going to make it. I'll be cheering for you though! It's a pretty awe-inspiring number.

I hadn't made it one of my actual resolutions as listed on my blog but I'm really thinking I want to try and read more non-fiction myself, I was skimming the lists over on Amazon and discovered that a lot of people I'm really interested in have published books that I can't wait to get my hands on.

You've got a good list of goals there, I wish you the best of luck in meeting them!

  4. Ha! Love number 2! I too occasionally drift into a section that is not YA, it is always Fantasy. There I can find George R R Martin, Tolkein etc. etc.

  7. I read my first graphic novel The Gigantic Beard That Was Evil just last month. I loved it, and want to read more. I noticed Netgalley has quite a few Read Now grapic novels, so I might begin there. The Non-Fiction category always gets me. I read one biography last year, but it was aboit one of my favorite muscians. Good luck on all your goals!

  8. I don't know if I'd ever have the time to read a book a day, but I suppose reading graphic novels and pictures books help with that goal. Good luck! I've also been getting more into graphic novels this year--there are a couple more that I'd like to check out. Hope you have a happy and productive 2015!
