Give a short statement describing DECEPTION.
When seventeen-year-old Emma Vaile's parents go missing, she discovers she can see and control ghosts, and that her parents knew this all along. She's thrown into a secret world of ghostkeepers and has to solve an other-worldly mystery. Oh, and lose her best friend and fall for the wrong guy, while trying to maintain a B average at an exclusive prep school.
Emma doesn’t seem particularly worried about the disappearance of her parents, which surprised me. Is the situation one that Emma is accustomed to from years of similar trips? If so, what does this reveal about Emma’s parents? If not, what does Emma’s lack of anxiety reveal about her?
They have gone on long trips before, without being much in touch with her. They're techno-phobic, so she isn't shocked they aren't answering their cell, and she's kind of overwhelmed by everything else that's happening to her. I don't think there's a lack of anxiety. She's constantly trying to figure out where they are and then worries that they're involved with some terrible things that are happening. But yes, their relationship is essentially flawed, even though she loves them and they love her.
Why did you choose to write ghosts into Emma’s story, rather than another paranormal creature or twist?
Because I wanted to write something sort of Gothic, and to me that meant an old house, mystery, and ghosts.
How many novels do you intend to write about Emma? Are you currently working on any other projects?
There are three books total in the Haunting Emma series. Deception is out June 8th, Betrayal in March 2011, and I'm currently writing Possession, which will be published late 2011
My blog is dedicated to my personal hiding spot, books. Who, what, or where can be credited as your personal escape from reality?
Oh, definitely books.

I like that she called it a gothic type of story. This definitely has a gothic mood to it and I'm looking forward to reading it!
ReplyDeleteGrat interview! ;)
Great interview. And I definitely agree on books being a great escape from reality.
ReplyDeleteLate 2011?! *groan* don't wanna wait that long!!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a brilliant read, I'd love a copy! Thanks for running the giveaway :O)
ReplyDeletei cant wait to read this one!
ReplyDeletethanks so much for making this international
Ohh, I kind of wish she hadn't said the third book was called Possession, cos now I totally feel like the book will be about these ghosts possessing humans, which (a) that's meant to be demons, not ghosts, and (b) is just awful. Just is. Ergh. Yuck.
ReplyDeleteI mean, it probably isn't that kind of possession, but it just makes it sound like it....
Nice perceptive question about Emma's lack of worry about her parents, Sara. :) I'm glad you asked that - if I'd read the book and a question like that hadn't been answered, it would've driven me crazy (or undermined my confidence in Emma's ability to think/care).
The book sounds good though. I wonder if the huge green pendant Emma's wearing on the front cover is symbolic in the book in some way? It seems almost highlighted on the cover, even though it's relegated to the bottom corner!
Enjoyed the interview, sounds good! tWarner419@aol.com
ReplyDeleteGreat questions! Thanks for the contest!
ReplyDeleteGreat interview! This book sounds very interesting :)
ReplyDeleteHer parents are techno-phobic? How stranger. Technology is such a common thing now in our day, I think that they might as well accept it. Oh well, to each his and her own. And the author's idea of gothic is really interesting. Thanks for the interview!
ReplyDeleteOh, cool interview and contest.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Good interview with a clear explaination of the relationship between Emma and her parents.
ReplyDeleteThis looks interesting I want to read it.
Oh thank you !
ReplyDeleteI must admit I am getting just a bit weary of vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters et al.
Ghosts would be a nice change to read about.
And I appreciate the giveaway being worldwide as well.
