I think, out of all the fairy tales, I would probably like a retelling of Hansel and Gretel, I think -- because all the other fairy tale retellings follow princesses and curses. It would be interesting to see what could be done with it.

Hmm...most fairy tales have already been retold many, many times. I liked the Princess and the Frog. I thought that one was pretty funny/cute/sweet, so I'd like a novel that bases its story around that idea.

Fairy tale or myth retold: My three favorites (Mulan, Twelve Dancing Princesses and East o'the Moon, West o'the Sun) have all been done at various times. I wouldn't mind something like the Japanese fairy tale of Susano or Amaterasu being done. You don't often see them being done in Western fiction.

ReplyDeleteI'd like to see something more boy-centric, like Hansel and Gretel or Jack and the Beanstalk. A lot of them are pretty girly, which is okay, but I think that there's room to pull in a male audience.

I love any and all fairy tale retellings, and I've even tried to write some myself. I love retellings of fairy tales that aren't as well known, like Goose Girl by Shannon Hale. I do think it would be cool to see a retelling of Little Mermaid or Princess and the Pea.

ReplyDeleteCinderella is & always has been one of my favorites to have retold. But I'd also love to see Little Red Riding Hood updated & maybe changed a bit. What if the Big Bad Wolf isn't a wolf? What if he's a con-artist? Then who is the woodcutter?

I love retellings! Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce is un my TBR pile :D But one story I haven't read any retellings of, is Little Mermaid! It's one of my favorite fairy tales so I'd love to see it updated :D

ReplyDeleteI'd choose The Steadfast Tin Soldier by Hans Christian Andersen. It does not seem very popular among storytellers, and I think it has something to do with the soldier being less than the usual Prince Charming material. A modern version might have someone coming home from a tour of duty with only one leg. A challenge to write about, at the very least!

ReplyDeleteI love Arthurian lore. How about a modern follow-up to the tales of King Arthur. Set in modern day, with characters who are the descendants of the "real" King. And somehow the events of the past begin to play out again in modern day. Magic sword and all!

Princess and the frog, or anything from King Arthur's tales or Shakespeare's comedies. ...Not that those are actually "fairy-tales" but eh. I'd love to see a YA book revolve around any of those plots, while adding a unique twist.

ReplyDeleteI pretty much love any fairy tale retelling so it's hard to choose... I'd like to see a well done novelization of The Little Mermaid. Even though it's tragic it's one of my favorites. Also, I'm a sucker for any Beauty and the Beast retelling, even though there's already tons of them out there!

ReplyDeleteMy most favorite fairy tale has always been The Twelve Dancing Princesses, so I'm always exited to see that one retold, but I would really like to see some of the more obscure Grimm's tales, like Jordan and Joringel (sp?) retold as well.
